A show’s history can offer valuable insight when you’re considering whether or not it is a good fit with your exhibiting plan. History can be broken down into two main factors: your own history of past success (or failure) at the show, and the show’s track record with other exhibitors. When you’re looking at both factors, try to encompass a history of at least the past three years, up to a decade if possible. Watch for patterns and trends. Is the show getting better, or worse, over time? If you don’t have your own history at the show, or can’t find adequate information on the show itself, track down past exhibitors and see what they have to say.

This is often the most overlooked factor when choosing trade shows for your strategy, but it’s actually quite important. When is the show taking place, and will that date work well for your business? When you’re looking at trade show attendance, you’re looking at two things: who attends, and who exhibits?
The attendees, your audience, should always be your number one consideration. Don’t just look at total numbers, but who is in the crowd? Is a large enough percentage of the audience part of your target market? In other words, are these the people who can potentially buy your product? And more importantly, are they the decision makers with purchasing authority?
