introduction

Dye sublimation is how we produce vivid, long-lasting graphics on powder-coated aluminum panels, from donor recognition walls to outdoor signage. We’ll break down what dye sublimation is, how it works, and why it might be exactly what your next display needs.

what is dye sublimation printing?

Dye sublimation is a heat-transfer printing method that embeds dye directly into the surface of a material. Unlike other printing techniques that sit on top of a surface, dye sublimation bonds with it. This results in ultra-durable, vibrant graphics that won’t scratch, chip, or fade.

The bottom line: Your graphics look better, last longer, and work harder for your brand.

how does the dye sublimation print process work?

Here's how we use a two-step process in our studio's print department. Dye sublimation can be used on a variety of materials such as fabric, but we specialize in producing ultra-durable powder-coated aluminum panels with a variety of finishes.

1. print onto specialized transfer paper

We start by printing high-resolution graphics using specialized sublimation inks onto a high-quality heat-transfer paper.

2. Apply heat and pressure

The printed paper is placed onto the surface of the substrate (aka material), and then run through a heat press. This process transforms the ink into a gaseous state, allowing it to fuse into the surface of the material. When it cools, the ink solidifies and becomes permanently bonded to the surface.

The result is incredibly vibrant, durable graphics that are waterproof, UV-resistant, and durable for years to come.

benefits of dye sublimation

  • Superior durability without peeling, chipping or fading (no lamination required)
  • Easy to clean and sanitize for high-touch point environments
  • Premium colour vibrancy and fine image detail
  • Withstands outdoor exposure (waterproof and UV-resistant)

applications for dye sublimated graphics panels

  • Signage and wayfinding
  • Interpretive information panels
  • Donor recognition panels
  • Architectural features
  • Murals, galleries, and other displays

final thoughts

Dye sublimation offers even more high-quality options for signage, displays, and architectural features. For projects that demand premium quality, dye sublimation delivers exceptional durability and a refined finish that stands up to years of intensive use and exposure.
